Breadfruit Festival Goes Bananas 2012 : Breadfruit Festival Goes Bananas took place on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona and was attended by 1,900 people. The event celebrates the cultural and culinary aspects of breadfruit and banana, both of which were nutritionally important food staples and played a major role in the cultural, material and spiritual life of ancient Hawaiians. The event was sponsored by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s Kūkulu Ola—Living Hawaiian Culture Program administered by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, Doc Buyers Fund at Hawaii Community Foundation, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Kamehameha Schools, Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, Kamehameha Investment Corporation, Ho‘oulu Lāhui, Kua O Ka Lā Public Charter School, West Hawai‘i Community College Culinary Arts Program, and Big Island Resource Conservation and Development.

Breadfruit Festival 2011 : Hawai‘i Homegrown Food Network, the Breadfruit Institute of the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden presented the Breadfruit Festival—Ho‘oulu ka ‘Ulu at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. The Breadfruit Festival celebrates the rich culture of breadfruit (‘ulu) in Hawai‘i and the Pacific, raises awareness about the importance of breadfruit for food security and gives the people an opportunity to taste many delicious ways that breadfruit can be prepared. An estimated 2,000 people attended the event.

'Ulu from Root to Fruit : These workshops took place at Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona on March 12, 2011 and at Kua O Ka La Public Charter School in Puna on March 13, 2011. Workshop participants learned about breadfruit culture and history, propagation, planting, pruning, fertilizing, harvesting, preparing, cooking and eating. The workshop was sponsored by Hawai'i Homegrown Food Network, The Breadfruit Institute, Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, Kua O Ka La, and Ho'oulu Lahui.
